Information for Florida Vacations in Vero Beach

Vero Beach, part of Florida's Treasure Coast, is known for its outstanding beaches which combine excellent sand quality with significant surf and tidal action. Vero's main public beach is South Beach, accessible at the eastern end of Causeway Boulevard. Vero Beach is located in Indian River County, which is recognized as the 'Citrus Capital of the World,' producing the finest Indian River citrus for the domestic market and worldwide export. The town is divided between the Florida mainland and the barrier islands off the coast, separated by the Indian River.

Activities

Vero beach is home to the Navy SEAL Museum, on the original training site of the first U.S. Navy Frogmen. There is a showcase that honors Naval Combat Demolition Units, Scouts and Raiders, Underwater Demolition Teams, and Sea, Air, Land Teams (SEALs). Outdoor displays include a Vietnam era Huey helicopter and SEAL Delivery Vehicles. Visit the Manatee Observation and Education Center in nearby Ft. Pierce. Visitors may see Florida's manatees, fish, birds, butterflies and dolphin and tour the exhibit hall and learn about many of the ecosystems that manatees and other creatures call home. The McKee Botanical Garden is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, an 18-acre subtropical garden.  Its unique hammock supports a dense and diverse botanical collection as well as several restored architectural treasures.

Events

Dodgertown has been the spring training home of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 1948, and serves as the home field where the Florida State League's Vero Beach Devil Rays play each summer. In February, the nearby Grant Seafood Festival is the Southeast's largest seafood festival. In addition to the seafood, be sure to see the craft show where crafters from across the country will be exhibiting their “handmade” crafts during the two day festival. The Annual Fishing Frenzy in May takes place from nearby Fort Pierce. The event, which draws crowds of over 3500, features an offshore fishing tournament for dolphin.

Water Sports

The Atlantic Coast beaches of Vero beach and the Treasure Coast are perfect for swimming, surfing, or catching up on your tan. You can also find powerboat and sailboat rentals, as well as jetski rentals. The warm Atlantic waters are inviting for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Golfing

With great year-round weather and pleasant beaches for a back ground, Vero Beach offers more that 34 public, private and semi-private golf courses to choose from, providing a wide range of challenges for the avid golfer.

History

In 1567 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, marched south from St. Augustine to expand Spain’s influence in the region, encountering the Ais as he reached the Indian River near present day Vero Beach. These Native Americans were hunters and fishers, with agriculture limited to gathering wild plants and berries. The Ais, like the Tequesta, became allies of the Spanish, considering other Europeans in Florida to be enemies.
